Implementation, adoption and ongoing usage of an electronic health record will change your organization. And with any organization-changing decision, there are pros and cons.

Earlier this week we highlighted some of the advantages to implementing an EHR. Now we will cover some of the cons.

Negatives of EHRs

  • Up-front cost. EHRs are not cheap, just like all other major pieces of equipment within your hospital. However, meaningful use incentive funds often cover the full cost of the system and then some, allowing you to use the extra money to pay off old debt, purchase other equipment or introduce new programs to your hospital. Plus, financing options are available that offer low initial down payments, allowing you to bridge the timeframe from contract signing to incentive payment.

  • Implementation headaches. All implementations come with their hiccups. It is simply part of the process. Find a vendor that works to keep the implementation timetable short (e.g., 120-day go-live schedule) with date-driven activities to always keep the momentum moving forward. A strong vendor-client partnership can overcome implementation headaches and quickly get your hospital live and using the system.

  • Difficult discussions. Many CEOs are forced to have difficult discussions around their EHR. For example, a physician refuses to use the system. Sometimes CEOs are forced to have the difficult conversation and say, “Get on board with this or get out.” While it is a conversation no one wants to have, the benefits of an EHR far outweigh one or two naysayers in your organization.
